#POINT OF VIEW: Viviane Barroso Moreira, BIM Manager WESCAN

Viviane Barroso Moreira is an architect, a graduate of the University of Brasilia, where during her studies she had the opportunity to experience the Polytechnic of Turin, her first contact with the European reality and the world of restoration.

After graduation, she returned to Italy to complete a master's degree in restoration at La Sapienza University of Rome, an experience that brought her progressively closer to an interest in BIM and its applications in complex contexts. She then decided to further specialize with a master's degree focused on Building Information Modeling.

In 2021 he joined WESCAN, where he found the ideal environment to combine his technical skills and methodological vision gained over time. Within the company he grows to the role of BIM Manager, contributing to the development and implementation of digital processes oriented to quality, precision and interdisciplinary collaboration.

BIM manager profession: by accident or by choice?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "It was a choice built step by step. During my studies, I became interested in technologies applied to architecture. At La Sapienza, I understood how important it was to integrate traditional methods with more advanced digital tools. From there, an increasing interest in BIM was born, which led me to specialize with a dedicated master's degree. It was not a sudden change, but a natural path of curiosity, study and desire for evolution. Joining WESCAN was the ideal context to transform this choice into daily practice, leading to the role of BIM Manager that I hold today."

BIM: What do you think are the most revolutionary aspects of this methodology?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "In our work at WESCAN, the real BIM revolution lies in the ability to digitize the existing in a comprehensive and reliable way, transforming physical reality into a data-rich information model. Using advanced acquisition technologies-such as static laser scanners, SLAM mobile scanners, photogrammetric drones, and LiDAR sensors-we are able to create extremely detailed surveys that become the basis for accurate BIM models of the existing. BIM is not just a 3D model, but a dynamic system of information that allows us to analyze, manage and plan any intervention on the asset. This is the real paradigm shift: being able to make decisions on concrete, reliable and up-to-date data."

WESCAN is an innovation-focused company: what is your approach to Building Information Modeling?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "At WESCAN, BIM is an integral part of our operating method. Our approach stems from the need to digitize the built environment, particularly infrastructure, facilities and complex buildings, to return accurate, searchable and updateable information models to clients over time. Our strength lies in closely linking survey and BIM modeling: data acquired with state-of-the-art technologies-from static to mobile to drones-are processed in-house by a dedicated technical team. This allows us to control every step of the process and ensure consistent and documented quality. We firmly believe that any design intervention on the existing, if developed in BIM, must necessarily start from a BIM model of the existing state. This is the only way to work on a solid basis, reduce unforeseen contingencies and ensure consistency between survey, design and implementation."

What do you think is the impact of an evolved CDE in managing complex projects?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "An evolved CDE is the cornerstone of digital project management, especially when working on complex existing works that involve many actors and disciplines, from architects to planners to infrastructure managers. At WESCAN we use the CDE not only as a repository, but as a living work environment where every piece of information-from the point cloud to the BIM model to technical documents-is organized, traceable and accessible. By managing information flows in a structured way, we can dramatically reduce errors, improve collaboration with designers and contractors, and ensure that every step after the survey is based on certain and shared data."

In which WESCAN project did the Truspace platform bring effectiveness that is difficult to achieve otherwise?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "The Truspace platform made a decisive contribution in a recent project to digitize and BIM model a large Hotel, a complex building of more than 35,000 square meters. After an initial phase of extremely detailed data acquisition, we embarked on a long and challenging BIM modeling phase, periodically publishing intermediate model steps on the platform. Thanks to Truspace, architectural, structural and plant designers were able to start their activities right away, progressively monitor progress, and integrate model evolutions into their designs in a timely manner."

What are the features of Truspace that you find particularly effective and that you could no longer do without in your work as a BIM manager?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "Definitely the ability to centrally manage all information and the ease of communication and sharing with different stakeholders. It is crucial for me to be able to publish frequent and accurate updates on the model, allowing designers to receive notifications in real time, view evolutions directly in the browser, and interact immediately with digital content. Truspace facilitates collaboration, provides transparency, and makes each phase of the BIM project more fluid and manageable."

What do you hope the areas of development might be instead?

Viviane Barroso Moreira: "We would like to initiate an interesting research to implement directly in the platform advanced tools for checking and validating the accuracy between the developed model and the point cloud, making specific reference to the LOA (Level of Accuracy) defined by the U.S. Institute of Building Documentation (USIBD). This would allow all users to have timely verification of the quality and accuracy of the models produced, further enhancing the reliability of digital processes."
